Pope Benedict’s resignation – a spiritual release

Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of this month after nearly eight years as the head of the Catholic Church, saying he is too old to continue at the age of 85. The unexpected development - the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years - surprised governments, Vatican-watchers and even his closest aides.

To understand this unexpected development readers are referred to the previous post

Moon Wobble: Accidents or Spiritual Release

The Pope’s action is not an accident but a deliberate choice – a spiritual release from obsolete patterns of the past. In this post I had also mentioned that the New Moon at 21Aq was square the Moon’s North Node [21sc0]  and therefore triggering the Total Eclipse of 13th November [21sc57].

About this eclipse Nick Fiorenza [1]wrote:

“Our late sidereal Libra New Moon Eclipse lies with the clutches of the Scorpion, just past Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali. The New Moon conjoins Unukalhai of Serpens; Alpha Lupus; and Beta Centauri (Hadar).

With  Libra, the Scales, we can see how the two energetics work in balance for the growth of the soul. We must pursue new experience while completing or integrating our past experience. If we do not choose new experience we stay entrapped in our past patterns. Our New Moon star Unukalhai (Alpha Serpens), along with Beta Serpens, which form the neck and head of the serpent, impel us to demonstrate our true self-mastery by reaching beyond our past patterns and the entrapments of our incarnational experience to claim our evolutionary freedom, to create the destiny we seek.

In our mythical image, the Centaur is firmly clutching Lupus the beast, or is shown in mythical images of the 1700-1800s (Uranographia of Johann Bode; et. al.) as holding impaled Lupus upon a long spear. Either way, the Centaur is bringing Lupus with conscious deliberation to Ara, the sacrificial Altar of the Centaur, to be consumed in the Centaur's pyre. This articulates the slaying or sacrificing of lower-self personality desires / egoic self and related patterns of behavior. This relinquishment is required to claim the profound level of self-mastery implied and embodied by that which is above the ecliptic—Unukalhai, the neck of the Serpent whose head reaches for the Northern Crown. The meaning of the word "sacrifice" as used here is important to understand. To sacrifice means to give up something of a lower nature for a higher office—not self-sacrifice. This image articulates this process of the "sacrifice" of the lower self-pursuits (even the human form or mold) for the attainment of one's higher self-mastery and subsequent ascended mastery in the world—the power and wisdom embodied by Ophiuchus holding the Serpent”.

If, as we are claiming, the Pope’s abdication is related to  the 14th November eclipse, it may be worthwhile to examine that chart for further clues. We immediately notice that the eclipse is placed in the fourth house about which H.S. Green mentions:

“Unfortunate for the Monarch; some great or well known person may die or suffer discredit”.
Of course, here we do not have a ‘literal’ death but a ‘figurative’ one.

Then again we notice Saturn on the IC along with the TNP Poseidon [10sc20] and the TNO Deucalion [11sc46]. Poseidon is a TNP associated with religion and religious individuals like the Pope and a key phrase for Deucalion is: “feeling overwhelmed, not able to tread water (keep up with life)” [Philip Sedgwick ‘The Soul of the Sky’ ]

Progressing the eclipse chart brings the Poseidon-Deucalion conjunction to the progressed Ascendant on 28th February, the day the Pope leaves office. For readers who are interested in  Fixed Stars, Poseidon and Deucalion are conjunct the fixed star Acrux, alpha Crux [2]- a constellation shown as a Cross and associated with religion and mystical and theosophical interests. [Elsbeth Ebertin].

Note:

Pope Benedict XVI was born on  16 April 1927 at 04:15 am; Marktl, Germany [Rodden Rating AA] and  elected as Pope on  April 19, 2005 at about 5:50 PM local time at the Vatican.[3]

With an accurate birth time we find the progressed Ascendant [15cn15] conjunct progressed Pluto [15cn31]; progressed Sun [17cn] just past the conjunction and transit Pluto [11cp] slowly building up to an opposition to natal Pluto [13cn]

In terms of transits or progression Pluto squaring (one can add the conjunction too here) the  Ascendant suggests demanding circumstances in which you are challenged to reveal who you really are and what you really want. It is a season of unmasking. It may be that your old self is simply running on momentum…and the situation in becoming untenable [4].

The horoscope for the Pope’s election (April 19, 2005 at about 5:50 PM local time, Vatican) has 7cn-cp on the MC-IC axis and 6ar on the descendant. These positions are currently occupied by  the T-square of Kronos-Hades-Uranus-Pluto.

Pluto-Uranus: the end of an old order

Kronos-Hades: abdication or decline of an eminent person

It is reported that the Pope informed his inner circle of his decision at 11:42 AM local time on 11th Feb [5].The chart for the moment has 7ge on the Ascendant conjunct Jupiter 6ge square Neptune 2pi and Mars 7pi.

Jupiter-Neptune: feeling too passive,  sensitive, disillusioned, overwhelmed, hopeless or weak to do the things  that you/others think will make things better [6]

Finally, the MC of  the New Moon [10 Feb] chart  for the Vatican is 23s34 which is conjunct the midpoint of Poseidon-Requiem which here clearly refers to the cessation/end of a matter connected with the Pope.
