Obama Launches BRAIN Initiative to
Map the Human Brain, Apr 3, 2013
On Tuesday the president unveiled
his BRAIN initiative, aimed at unlocking the mysteries of the human brain.
Eliza Shapiro reports on the project’s potential ethical implications. We may
not be colonizing Mars or putting another man on the moon, but the Obama
administration took its first step toward Big Science innovation on Tuesday
when it unveiled the Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative
Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative, along with a $100 million kick-start. The
BRAIN initiative’s goal is just as lofty as space travel: understanding and
mapping the human brain.
The
cardinal ingress charts are a standard tool for mundane astrologers. Shown
above is the Aries Ingress chart progressed to April 2, when the President
announced the BRAIN initiative. Notice the Sun-Mars-Uranus [0ar, 6ar, 8ar]
conjunction forms the apex of a T-square with Pluto (11cp27)-Moon (8cn24) on the meridian axis.
In the
sector 6 to 9 Ar, we have IV
Cephei, above King’s Crown (6ar21), 34 Piscium, (6ar56), above cord of West Fish,13
Cephei, in King’s Crown (8ar38), 12 Andromedae near the chained right hand, (9ar13);
Algenib, gamma Pegasi, the wing of the
flying horse, (9ar20) [1]
Andromeda’s
chains and the Fishes’ cords generate a sense of limitation and bondage while
high flying Pegasus offers rescue with potent powers of visualization, the
ability to think big, to plan and bring to fruition huge projects and enterprises
with intense focus and determination so that Andomeda rescued from the
sea-monster and freed from her chains may ride high flying Pegasus to joyous
liberty and light. The flying horse, the Phoenicians’ symbol of navigation, combined with the stars on the Crown of Cepheus, the King to produce 15th
century Prince Henry, the Navigator of Portugal, sponsor of voyages of
discovery and “Father of Russian Navy”, Czar Peter the Great both of whom have planets here. If
we recognize these to be examples of Kings (those in authority) sponsoring
voyages into the unknown (Cetus’ domain) with a little of stretch of
imagination we can see that these voyages can also be into the depths of the
human psyche. In fact we have here
psychologists B F Skinner, Erich Fromm, Hans Eysenck and Victor Frankl, author of “Man’s search
for Meaning” as also mythologist Joseph Campbell [1]. In his book “The Hero
with a Thousand Faces,” Joseph Campbell describes the archetypal journey taken by Heroes of all
cultures far away from the solid
‘shores’ of their traditions and into the Unknown.
Perhaps the difference here appears to be that Obama’s
approach to Brain Mapping is connected entirely to the “hardware”. We may need to wait and see if there are breakthroughs in the “software” too – i.e. the psychological understanding
of the brain.
