Musca Full Moon brings awareness of mosquitoes to UK

Changes to UK urban areas provide habitats for mosquitoes, including species known to spread malaria and West Nile virus, a study suggests. Warmer ambient temperatures and more water containers in gardens are bringing mosquitoes into closer contact with people, say scientists. UK mosquitoes are human disease-free but the team says more of the insects breeding in urban areas increases the chances of a potential outbreak. BBC, May 21

The chart for the current Full Moon [23sc55] at London is shown here. Notice that it is not only very significantly placed on the horizon axis but is also anchored to the Cardinal Grand Cross. The Full Moon is conjunct the star eta Muscae [23sc37] and therefore the news is quite timely!

The word musca comes from the Indo-European root *mu- 'Gnat, fly, to buzz'. Derivatives: midge (from Old English mycg, midge, from Germanic *mugjo). Suffixed extended form *mus-ka-; mosquito. While the constellation has been generally called the Southern Fly, it should also represent the mosquito, a Spanish word, diminutive of mosca, 'fly', from Latin musca. [1]
