The abdication of King Juan Carlos I of Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced that King Juan Carlos I will abdicate.King Juan Carlos I's decision follows years of criticism for his lavish lifestyle and an investigation into alleged corruption by his son-in-law. He will be succeeded by his son Prince Felipe. TIME; June 2

The solar eclipse [8ta52] of April 29, 2014 fell in the mundane 12th house at Madrid in a square aspect to the MC and was, therefore, very significant for the place. Since it was conjunct Alpha (α) Cassiopeia, Schedir [1], we are reminded  by Elsbeth Ebertin that the arrogance and love of luxury of this constellation can lead to problems. (Incidentally, it also fell on the King’s radix Uranus in his 12th house of self undoing)

Should good living transgress reasonable limits the results will be disadvantageous. [Fixed Stars and Their Interpretation, Elsbeth Ebertin, 1928, p.20.]

H.S. Green interprets the meaning of an eclipse in the 12th house as follows:

Liable to bring some misfortune, sorrow, discredit or drawback to the country or the Monarch.

The eclipse luminaries and the Ascendant are  also tied to the Cardinal Cross through hard aspects making the eclipse extra significant for the place.

Progressing the eclipse angles by the PSSR method brings the Grand Cross to the horizon axis on June 2, triggering its potential. The interpretation of the elements of the Cross are:

Kronos-Hades: the decline (Hades) of a leader (Kronos)

Uranus-Pluto: the end of an old order

In addition we can now look at the King’s natal chart [2]. His radix Sun [14cp] is receiving the full effect of the Cardinal Grand Cross with Pluto transiting over the Sun while Uranus squares it. Ebertin’s key phrase for Uranus-Pluto – the end of an old order – applies perfectly here.

But perhaps the most interesting part of the analysis is the King’s solar return chart which has the Grand Cross sharply placed on the angles. Since Mars, the fastest member of the  Cross, was retrograde for the last several months, things were not going anywhere. When it went direct on May 20, Mars put an end to this long period. As Mars separated out of this celestial formation, it signalled what might be best understood as the “tension release phase” of a Grand Cross, a phase that is normally characterized by action.  This phase was expected  to be defined by decisive acts intended to facilitate personal and collective liberation, as those affected tried to break free from whatever enslaved. On June 2, the date of the news, Mars is within less than a degree to a conjunction  with the King’s solar return Ascendant triggering the change.
