Conservationists Seek Protection for Monarch Butterflies

WASHINGTON— The Center for Biological Diversity and Center for Food Safety as co-lead petitioners joined by the Xerces Society and renowned monarch scientist Dr. Lincoln Brower filed a legal petition today to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeking Endangered Species Act protection for monarch butterflies, which have declined by more than 90 percent in under 20 years. During the same period it is estimated that these once-common iconic orange and black butterflies may have lost more than 165 million acres of habitat — an area about the size of Texas — including nearly a third of their summer breeding grounds. In this post we will go back to the lunar Full Moon eclipse of April 15, 2014 to see how it influences the news above. But first let us remember that the Full Moon brings to culmination in the lunar cycle  a theme that starts at the New Moon of March 30.

For this I refer my readers to Nick Fiorenza’s excellent post [1]  on the March 30 lunar cycle, from which the following is extracted.

This New Moon catalyzes an unprecedented lunar cycle providing opportunity for revolutionary change in many facets of our personal lives and in the world. The main event occurring in this lunar month is the Mars-Jupiter-Uranus-Pluto Grand Square. It is a doorway that requires a decisive choice to leave one way of being, to live the wisdom gained from the past, and to morph into a new way of being and into a new world paradigm yet to unfold throughout the remainder of the 2010s.

The April 15 Total Lunar Eclipse occured just into sidereal Libra conjoining Ceres and Vesta opposite the Sun-Juno-Eris conjunction.  The Lunar focus is Ceres and Vesta under the Archturian directive—focus, dedication and commitment to the fundamental nourishment required to support all life on Earth and for our evolutionary fulfillment.

Notice also the Vesta-Ceres-Moon conjunction nesting between Mars and the North Lunar Node, creating one entire energetic directly in opposition to the entire stellium of planets including the Sun-Juno-Eris conjunction and the Mercury-Uranus conjunction. Thus our Lunar Eclipse became another significant dynamic of the Grand Square.

This Grand Square creates a primary catalytic turning in and engagement of the 2012-2015 Uranus-Pluto Square and its theme, Revolution and Revelation, which is the first quarter point of stimulus to action in the 138-year Uranus-Pluto cycle that began in 1966. It triggers the outward actualization of the Uranus-Pluto Square, the Jupiter-Uranus Square and the Jupiter Pluto Opposition, a turning that will ensue over many years to come.

The new Earth-Vesta and Earth Ceres synodic cycles impel us to get very clear about what is essential to ensure our safe and harmonious evolutionary experience and fulfillment on Earth, and to ensure souls birthing into this experience in the future will also have this opportunity. The quality of our environment and of our biological condition must become a priority over amassing power and resources to dominate and control life based upon personal motive.

If now we progress the lunar eclipse chart to August 26, 2014, the date of the news we find the eclipse axis square the horizon and the Grand Cross straddling the meridian triggering an event whose theme is in line with the essential message of the eclipse.

S.S. Central America’s shipwreck yields gold

More than 2,900 gold coins and 45 gold ingots have been recovered from the shipwrecked S.S. Central America since an archaeological excavation began in mid-April, Odyssey Marine Exploration, (Tampa,Fl)  the company contracted to dive to the site, revealed on a report published Tuesday (Aug.26).  http://bit.ly/1tQ6jFA

SS Central America, known as the Ship of Gold, was a 280-foot (85 m) sidewheel steamer that operated between Central America and the eastern coast of the United States during the 1850s. The ship sank in a hurricane on 11 September 1857, along with more than 550 passengers and crew and 30,000 pounds (14,000 kg) of gold, contributing to the Panic of 1857.

In several previous posts we have seen how long after eclipses are over and gone, they continue to affect events in our lives. This is especially true in places where eclipses or major configurations accompanying them aspect the angles. Shown here is the chart for the last solar eclipse of April 29, 2014 at Tampa, Florida where the Odyssey Marine Exploration company has its headquarters.

The eclipse was primarily conjunct Schedar[1], alpha Cassiopeiae [8ta]. Writing in the 1st Century AD, the Roman astronomer linked the stars of Cassiopeia with greed for gold [1]. Notice that the eclipse [9ta]  is  on the IC with Mercury [12ta], square the horizon axis and conjunct the star Azha, eta Eridanus [9ta]. Eridanus was an ancient celestial river. Unlike earthly rivers, Eridanus is depicted flowing upstream symbolizing a return to the past. News related to an old shipwreck is, therefore, quite appropriate under stars of Eridanus. On the MC with Saturn [20sc] is the star 1 Carinae, in the keel of Argo Navis – the celestial ship. Also on IC [20ta] is the star kappa Ceti [19ta] in the sea monster’s jaw – an apt  symbol for an angry  devouring sea in a hurricane.

Progressing the eclipse chart to August 26, the date of the report, brings the Uranus-Pluto Grand Cross on the meridian axis with Mars on the IC quincunx the eclipse. Uranus-Pluto is a combination that refers to radical, life threatening events and with Jupiter  to scientific and technological breakthroughs so that it is relevant to the fortunate breakthrough in the excavation of the shipwreck. Jupiter [14cn] is conjunct Canopus [15cn] – alpha Carina in the Celestial Ship, Argo Navis. On the Ascendant [24cn] is the star Pollux of Gemini Twins associated with disasters at sea. Incidentally, on 11 September 1857, when  SS Central America went down in a hurricane, Saturn [25cn] was conjunct Pollux.

Finally, the chart for the New Moon of August 25 also confirms these events. The New Moon [2vi] is conjunct chi Carinae [1vi] in Argo’s keel, epsilon and theta Pyxidis [2vi and 3vi] in the Compass/ Mast of Argo and gamma Sextant [3vi] [2]. The MC [13cn] is conjunct Canopus [15cn]. Finally, the New Moon is in hard aspect to Uranus on the descendant which in turn is square Pluto on the IC – a combination that we mentioned earlier refers to radical events. With Uranus and Pluto retrograde, an event from the past is being hinted at.

Astrology of the Ice Water Challenge

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. It went viral on social media during July-August 2014.

How did the craze start?
In the States, when Chris Kennedy, a golfer from Sarasota in Florida, was nominated by a friend to participate in an ice bucket challenge similar to the one screened live on-air by programme Golf Channel Morning. Kennedy was the first to associate the challenge with ALS because he has a relative suffering from the disease and his video was posted back on July 15. http://dailym.ai/1qpZBDO

Shown here are two mundane charts drawn for Sarasota, Florida. The first is the Capricorn return chart progressed to July 15, 2014 while the second is the chart for the Full Moon of July 12.

In the first chart we have Admetus on the descendant and Neptune on the IC in what is commonly known as a paran aspect. Both these form hard aspects to the asteroids Ceres and Vesta. Key phrases for the relevant combinations are:

Admetus-Neptune
Admetus is density, cold or hardness while Neptune is water so that the combination is cold water or ice.

Ceres-Neptune
The need to  "take care of people" because they're sick, weak, dependent or  emotionally fragile.

The first combination explains the   “ice bucket” challenge and the second tells us the reason why it is being undertaken.

Why has it become a craze ?. Well Neptune is also linked to “fads and fashions”.

Neptune, by nature, always involves the process of dissolving whatever it touches into an undifferentiated sea of consciousness. Through Neptune, we ‘lose’ ourselves – in dreams, in fantasy, in drugs, in the emotions of the crowd, in fads and fashions, in sympathy and compassion. http://health.wikinut.com/Neptune-Transcending-Illusions/27zo9ilq/

In the second chart we have the  Full Moon luminaries forming a Grand Cross with Uranus and Mars on the meridian. The Sun [20cn] is aligned with Castor, alpha Geminorum, in the Twins’ head and  Mirza, Canis Major, in the Dog’s head. Uranus [16ar] is conjunct lambda Cephei [16ar] in the King’s head. These star positions according to Diana Rosenberg link to “brain diseases” and  “head ailments”. The Moon [20cp] is conjunct alpha Pavonis,  in the Peacock’s head [23cp] and iota Sagittari [22cp] in the Archer’s hind foot once again hinting at the possibility of “brain and leg ailments”.  Further confirmation comes from the fact that the TNP Admetus[28ta]  along with the asteroids Hephaistos [27ta] and Terpsichore [28ta] forms a hard aspect to the  Pluto-Moon leg of the Cross.

Hephaistos: Problems with the limbs (usually the legs;) lameness; crippling.
Terpsichore: coordination, agility, mobility; flexion muscles

It is known that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder with various causes.  The earliest symptoms of ALS are typically obvious weakness and/or muscle atrophy. About 75% of people contracting the disorder experience "limb onset" ALS, i.e., first symptoms in the arms or legs.

DNA test on cow settles ownership

A court in Kollam (Quilon) on Wednesday (August 27) settled a two-year-long legal battle between two women over the ownership of a cow after conducting a DNA test. This is perhaps the first time a DNA test on a cow was done to settle its ownership right. Two years ago, Geetha complained that she left her cow to graze in a nearby area but it did not return. She claimed that the cow and its calf were found in a nearby village after a few days but the alleged owner Sasilekha refused to part with the cow. Later Geetha filed a police complaint, refusing to settle the case as both women insisted on being the cow's owners. Subsequently a case of theft was registered against Sasilekha and her son. Both of them later got bail from Kerala high court. On further inquiry, police found that the mother of the disputed cow was alive. Soon the court ordered a DNA test on both cows. The report concluded that blood samples of disputed cow and its mother were not matching, hence, giving Sasilekha the possession of the animal. HT

A humorous story but which does find a reflection in the stars. Shown here is chart for the Capricorn Ingress of the Sun progressed to August 27. Notice the Grand Cross on the angles. Delineation [1]for elements of the Cross are as follows:

Kronos-Pluto
Events show that differences of opinion or legalities are actually power struggles or arise from resentments and a need to push others to their limits.

Jupiter-Kronos
Experts in legal matters; expert opinion.

[Uranus-Pluto] – Jupiter
Legal redress or expert opinion (Jupiter) solves an abusive or life threatening situation (Uranus-Pluto).

On the MC  with Uranus (8ar36) is the star alpha Reticuli (7ar40) [2].

Reticuli, the rhomboid or diamond, embodies the essence of our DNA, that of carbon based-life forms.  Reticuli is sometimes referred to as "the net" [3]

Does the  chart indicate  a cow and her calf? The position of Diana – asteroid linked to animals – is [16cn] in the draconic zodiac. This is conjunct tropical Jupiter [17cn] and asteroid Child [18cn] square Ceres [19li].

CERES: Goddess of agriculture, food and nurturance; the relationship between mother & child.

DIANA : Animals

Ceres and Diana can combine in at least two ways relevant to our story. They can together refer to (a) an animal like a cow that provides milk as nurturance (b) the cow and the calf.

That completes the picture. We have the legal redress  where expert opinion uses new technology (Uranus)  based on a DNA test (Reticuli) to solve an issue involving a cow (Diana) and her calf (Ceres).

Fermilab: Do we live in a 2-D hologram?

A unique experiment at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory called the Holometer has started collecting data that will answer some mind-bending questions about our universe – including whether we live in a hologram. Much like characters on a television show would not know that their seemingly 3-D world exists only on a 2-D screen, we could be clueless that our 3-D space is just an illusion. The information about everything in our universe could actually be encoded in tiny packets in two dimensions. Fermilab, Press Release; August 26. Batavia, Il http://1.usa.gov/XR4kFj

Modern science is turning our notion of what constitutes the Universe on its ear, and nowhere is this more evident than the theory that the Universe itself is a hologram.  Beginning with quantum physics and particle/wave theory, which suggested in the early part of the 20th century that the Universe is operating on many different levels than our three-dimensional reality would suggest. Lynn Hayes http://bit.ly/1tZMlGF

Neptune is the planet that dissolves the boundaries of our limited perception of reality, and is often referred to as the planet of illusion. Saturn is the planet of boundaries or “consensus reality”.  Neptune wants to transcend the earthly boundaries of his father Saturn (the earth god) into the higher non-Saturnian realms which is multi-dimensional.

The current New Moon chart of August 25 drawn for Batavia, Illinois is shown here. There are at least two significant points to note. First, that the New Moon is opposite Neptune in Pisces which of course true for the entire world. Secondly Neptune  forms aspects to the Ascendant and MC of the chart making its influence specific for the place.

The New Moon is in hard aspect to both Uranus and Neptune. Both these are  conjunct stars of the winged horse Pegasus which symbolically represents the raising of consciousness beyond its present limitations.

To complete the picture, we look at the progressed sidereal Cancer Ingress chart for August 26, the day of the Fermilab Press Release, to find the Uranus-Pluto square strongly placed on the angles.

Richard Tarnas notes, “With Pluto acting on Uranus, we can see what could be called the intensification on a massive scale (Pluto) of technology (Uranus) or the empowerment (Pluto) of revolutionary breakthroughs (Uranus) and awakenings”.  He gives as an example the  tremendous scientific discovery and revolutions in science at  turn of the Twentieth Century when a Pluto-Uranus opposition [1896-1905]  took place.

IMF's Christine Lagarde 'under investigation'

French authorities have formally opened a negligence investigation into Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She has been questioned about her role in awarding 400m euro (£318m; $527m) in compensation to businessman Bernard Tapie in 2008. She denies wrongdoing. Ms Lagarde, 58, was finance minister in President Nicolas Sarkozy's government at the time of the award. BBC, Aug.27 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28948925

Christine Lagarde [1]  was born on 1 January 1956 at 13:40 CET, Paris. With a  Rodden Rating AA, the chart is a delight for astrologers since it allows for an accurate progression of the angles. The table below shows that her solar arc Ascendant is in hard aspect to Saturn-Pluto-Moon-Kronos. Also her radix Sun [10cp] which is currently transited by Pluto [11cp] is in hard aspect to to Saturn-Pluto-Moon-Kronos.

Delineations  provided by Martha Wescott  for the various combinations are as under:

Kronos-Pluto
To be aware that prominent persons (including leaders in government) are under substantial pressure;  to see abuses of power through misuse of office, position, laws and procedures; events show that differences of opinion, legalities, rules or attempts to set procedures are actually power struggles or arise from resentments and a need to push others to their limits

Pluto-Hades
To hear of criminal activities in the world of finance or big business; to recognize pressures that play on a sense of shame or the veiled threat of humiliation.

Kronos-Hades
To recognise humiliation through loss of position; executives discuss the past or investigations;  to see government or authorities indulge in “dirty business”; decline of a leader or executive authority.

Saturn-Pluto
Success, ambitions or reputation undermined; to see that there is nothing to do but accept current hardships.

Her diurnal [2] Ascendant [26sc] for August 27, the date of the news is conjunct radix Saturn [28sc] opposite Kronos [26ta] and square Moon [27le] and Pluto [28le] triggering all the solar arc directions in the table above.

The charts for (a) sidereal Cancer Ingress progressed to August 27 and  (b) the current New Moon (August 25) at Paris carry  a Grand Cross containing  Uranus-Pluto-Kronos-Hades on the meridian axis with the same message as above.

Indian woman kills leopard

An Indian woman armed only with farm tools is stable in hospital after killing a leopard that attacked her. Kamla Devi, 56, sustained multiple bites, cuts and fractures during the half-hour battle. She had been fetching water in northern Uttarakhand state when the leopard pounced on her from nearby bushes - she fought back with a sickle and spade. "I thought I was dead but I did not lose patience and courage," she told reporters after her lucky escape. Ms Devi was carrying water from a canal to her field near the village of Sem Nauti in Rudraprayag district when she was attacked on Sunday (August 24) . She said she managed to smash some of the animal's teeth during the struggle."I fought head on with it for almost half an hour. Then I came to know it was dead," she told reporters from hospital in the nearby town of Srinagar Garhwal. BBC

In mundane astrology, the importance of the Capricorn Ingress chart is universally recognized. A chart drawn for the Sun’s entry into Capricorn at any location is considered by many astrologers as the Annual Chart for that place since significant events seem to correlate with the progression of its angles. Shown here is the Capricorn Ingress chart for  Srinagar, Garwhal progressed to August 24, the date of the incident reported in the news.

Notice the slightly skewed Grand Cross  containing the Uranus-Pluto square on the angles. Richard Tarnas associates Uranus-Pluto with “the unleashing of the elemental forces of nature in various senses”. While he is of course referring to volcanoes and earthquakes etc. it is not too much of a stretch to include wild animal attacks under Uranus-Pluto energies. We need to remember that when a fast moving planet, like the Moon in this case, aspects the square it provides more specific details about where the Uranus-Pluto energy is likely to show itself. In our case here, the Moon [25le] is conjunct the star beta Leo Minor [25le].

Leo Minor, the Smaller Lion, as shown in the picture by Hevelius (1690), is the figure of a small lion positioned under the feet of the Great Bear, Ursa Major, and above the constellation Leo, the larger Lion. The constellation Leo Minor is an obvious reference  to smaller cats like the leopard which attacked the woman in the news.

Now for a moment let us look at the chart to see if we can find a reason why she won the battle with such a deadly predator. Here we find Jupiter on the Ascendant forming a loose Grand Cross with Uranus-Pluto and Mars. It is important to remember that in Astrology no planetary entity works as a solo agent. Each configures into the great cosmic clockworks. Jupiter in Cancer brings the element of good fortune in highly radical or life threatening situations symbolized by Uranus-Pluto. But more specifically Jupiter [17cn] is conjunct lambda Gemini [18cn] in Pollux’s right hand with a club – a reminder  that  the Twins were warriors.  Diana Rosenberg tells us that  “Win-at-all-costs” was the motto of Pollux, Zeus’ strong armed son [2]. So it not surprising to see Ms. Kamla Devi fought for her life and although badly wounded she eventually killed the leopard.

New Moon draws attention to the Madagascar pochard

The Madagascar pochard, the world's rarest bird, will not be able to thrive without a new wetland home. This is according to a study revealing that 96% of the chicks are dying at two to three weeks old. Conservationists say that human activity has driven the birds to one remaining wetland, but that that site has insufficient food for the ducks. The research is published in the journal Bird Conservation International. Human activity, including deforestation, farming and fishing, has destroyed their habitat to the point that this last population is now restricted to one wetland in north-east Madagascar - a complex of lakes near Bemanevika. BBC; August 25

Once again  we will see how the images in the sky map of a lunation can be very relevant for events on earth. Shown here is the chart for the New Moon of August 25 drawn for Bemanevika, Madagascar. Notice that it is very prominent for the place since it falls on the horizon axis opposite Neptune. Neptune in the water sign  Pisces brings us the realization of the interconnectedness of all life so that we begin to learn compassion and concern for all living creatures.

The New Moon [2vi] is conjunct the stars Megrez [1vi] and Phecda [1vi] both of Ursa Major – the protective and caring Mother Bear. Diana Rosenberg [1] links these stars to a“love of and concern for animals.”

The Ascendant [28aq] and Neptune [6pi] are conjunct the stars Gienah, epsilon Cygnus [28aq] and Deneb Adige, alpha Cygnus [6pi]. The constellation Cygnus [2] is often shown as a Swan. Swans (genus Cygnus) belong to the Anatidae family, which also includes geese and ducks!

Finally, notice the Grand Trine of Neptune, Ceres and the TNP Hades anchored to the Ascendant. Nick Fiorenza explains the function of  the asteroid Ceres thus:

Ceres, the mother of the main asteroids, brings awareness to how we nurture and to that which is truly nurturing to us. Ceres embodies mothering and agricultural qualities and brings attention to our relation with the Earth, the land, and the seasons. Due to Ceres’ association with the land, agriculture, the environment, and the seasons, Ceres is of particular interest in charts associated with environmental changes or events. Ceres reveals our ability to be in universal flow--the unification of giving and receiving as one flow of energy through ourselves.

Martha Wescott [3] provides the following sentences for the combination Ceres-Hades and Hades-Neptune.

Hades-Neptune
The past is the basis for negative prognosis or outlook; mistakes have occurred through a lack of clarity; bad things have happened through unknown or unseen causes; instances of mysterious decline.

Ceres-Hades
The need to care for or nurture those who  are  facing long-term problems.

Boy finds 10,000-year-old arrowhead on NJ beach

A boy playing on a New Jersey beach has unearthed a 10,000-year-old arrowhead possibly used by ancient Native Americans to spear fish or hunt mastodon. Ten-year-old Noah Cordle and his family were vacationing on the Long Beach Island last week when he found it at the edge of the surf in the community of Beach Haven. AP; Aug. 24

Long after eclipses are over and gone, they continue to affect events in our lives. This is especially true in places where eclipses or major configurations accompanying them aspect the angles. Shown here is the chart for the last solar eclipse of April 29, 2014 at Beach Haven, New Jersey. Notice that the eclipse [9ta]  is sharply square the horizon axis and conjunct the star Azha, eta Eridanus [9ta]. Eridanus was an ancient celestial river. As a symbol, a river relates to the creative power of nature and time and everything transitory: the flux of the world and the irreversible passage of time.  Unlike earthly rivers, Eridanus is depicted flowing upstream symbolizing a return to the past. The discovery  of an ancient artifact is, therefore, quite appropriate under stars of Eridanus.

The eclipse is also conjunct Mercury [12ta] and trine Pluto [13cp] which is conjunct the star Nunki [12cp]. Sigma (σ) Sagittarius, Nunki, is a star on the vane of the arrow in the archer's hand (see image)!

Progressing the chart to August 24, brings Pluto along with the Grand Cross to the horizon axis. The Ascendant [11cn] is conjunct the star theta Geminorum [11cn] in Castor’s left hand holding bow and arrows!

As always, planets and asteroids fill in the details. The asteroid Child [20cn] along with Jupiter [14cn] occupies the Ascendant. The TNPs Hades (ancient past) and Zeus (weapon) are part of the Grand Cross along with Jupiter/Uranus – a combination that stands for a sudden positive turn of events like an unexpected discovery as in this case.

It may be mentioned in passing that such surprising details in star maps as shown in this and many other examples come to us from  the second century BCE astronomer/astrologer Hipparachus, considered the greatest ancient authority on constellation figures so that Roman astrologer Manilius writing two centuries later carried forward this idea:

“You must not divert your attention from the smallest detail;
nothing exists without reason or has been uselessly created”

French PM resigns amid economy row

French PM Manuel Valls has submitted the government's resignation to President Francois Hollande and has been asked to form a new cabinet. The government was badly shaken on Sunday by criticism over its handling of the economy by economy minister Arnaud Montebourg. BBC; August 25. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28924279

Along with the Capricorn Ingress chart, the chart for the entry of the Sun into Cancer is considered to be extremely important in Mundane Astrology. Shown here is the chart for the Sun’s entry into sidereal Cancer at Paris.  What strikes us immediately is that New Moon of August 25 falls on the meridian axis activating this chart. Here we have Saturn on the Ascendant and Neptune on the IC in an aspect known as a paran.

Planets in paran are important indicators of combined planetary energy. All astrologers will agree that when planets are on angles they are "strong." And when you have two (or more) planets on two angles simultaneously, then, not only are the energies considered very strong, but they are also relating to one another. This can lead to either a synthesis of energy or a frustration of energies, depending on the two planets involved. Here we have Saturn on the Ascendant and Neptune on the IC.  Key phrases for Saturn-Neptune would be:

Saturn-Neptune
Undermining circumstances frustrate the government.

In his book “Mundane or National Astrology”, H.S. Green interprets, Neptune on the IC thus:

Neptune in the Fourth House
If afflicted, especially if the mid-heaven is involved, the Government may lose ground in some way and some failure or discredit may attach to prominent persons.

The second important thing to note is  today’s conjunction of Mars-Saturn on the Ascendant – a combination that stands for conflict. This conjunction also creates a high-tension inconjunct aspect to Uranus and Eris  (discord) on the South Lunar Node.

Progressing the Cancer Ingress chart to August 25 brings a powerful Grand Cross to the meridian axis.  Key phrases for elements of the Cross are:

Kronos-Pluto : Government is under substantial pressure

Uranus-Pluto : Collapse of an old order

Finally, when we draw the chart for the New Moon of August 25, we find once again the same Grand Cross straddling the meridian axis with the New Moon making hard aspects to the Uranus leg. This once again confirms that astrology is a hologram. No matter which way you look at things you get the same answers.

H.S. Green gives us the following interpretation of Uranus in the 4th  which the news report appears to confirm

Uranus in the Fourth House
This generally troubles the Government, putting many difficulties in their way either in Parliament or in the country. The Opposition may be stronger than usual and may score against the Government or unpopularity with the people may tell against them in the country, or contrary events may prove unfortunate for them.

Earthquake strikes San Francisco Bay area at New Moon

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has shaken northern California, reports the US Geological Survey. The USGS said it struck at 03:20 local time (10:20 GMT) four miles (6km) north-west of American Canyon, at a depth of 6.7 miles. The site is 51 miles from Sacramento and about 30 miles north-east of San Francisco, where many Twitter users say it woke them up. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. BBC, August 24 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-28918600

In his book “Mundane or National Astrology”, H.S. Green gives us the following rules:

“Earthquakes are often found to be associated with eclipses. An eclipse is always liable to cause seismic disturbances where it is visible, especially if it falls very close to the line of the horizon, i.e. the cusps of the first and seventh houses or of the meridian, i.e. the cusps of the tenth and fourth houses.”

Shown here is the chart for the Lunar Eclipse of  April 15 at American Canyon, California. Notice that it falls on the meridian axis. Also straddling the meridian axis is the energetic Grand Cross comprising Mars-Jupiter-Uranus-Pluto.

Richard Tarnas associates Uranus-Pluto with “the unleashing of the elemental forces of nature in various senses (the tangible increase in signs of extreme climate change, volcanoes and earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes, tsunamis and floods, undersea oil eruptions, mining disasters).”

Progressing the eclipse chart to August 24, brings the Grand Cross to an alignment with the horizon triggering the earthquake.

But as we have seen in several previous posts, if the faraway cause is an eclipse, it is usually also accompanied by an immediate cause such as a lunation. Tomorrow’s New Moon is placed on the horizon axis at the location of the earthquake with Neptune occupying the descendant.

Poseidon, later adopted into Roman myth as Neptune was known as “Earthshaker”.  Poseidon mated with Medusa - the only mortal gorgon – and she gave birth to their child, the winged horse Pegasus.

Here the descendant is  conjunct the star kappa Pegasi,[9pi08] in the the Flying Horse’s forefoot. It was said of Pegasus that  earthquakes took place when he stomped his feet.

Chinese man acquitted of murder in rare move

Chained Andromeda freed by Pegasus

A Chinese court on Friday (August 22) acquitted a death-row inmate who spent eight years behind bars for double murder in a high-profile case that observers say may be a rare exception in a court system riddled with wrongful convictions.

Citing insufficient evidence, the high court of the southeastern province of Fujian overturned the guilty verdict against Nian Bin, a grocery shop owner accused of fatally poisoning a fellow villager's two children in 2006. The case attracted some of China's most prominent lawyers and wide attention in social media.

"As far as we can tell, this is an isolated case, but we hope this will help China move forward — even with a small step — in building rule of law," Beijing-based legal scholar Xu Xin said. "We should thank his lawyers and their unrelenting efforts for the acquittal. The social media also have played a role, having put pressure on the court to hear the case fairly." Yahoo News; August 22, 2014

To understand this news, we will go back to the last Solar Eclipse, the chart for which is shown here, drawn for Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province.

The following extract from Nick Fiorenza [1] on the Solar eclipse of April 29, 2014 is relevant in our context. As the eclipse occurred in the 9th house of law courts, the reference to the King and Queen would be to the judges who are in a position to aid or condemn the accused. The sea monster Cetus refers to the collective fear that led to the accusation of the victim. And finally the freeing of Princess Andromeda in the story (not mentioned below) would be a reference to what happened in the court on Friday.

Solar eclipses offer opportunity to redefine concepts of self and the roles we play in the world, or how we articulate ourselves in life. They are about shifting octaves in the nature of our self-perception and self-expression, and addressing issues that keep us from doing so. They can invite a new beginning, way of life, or new way of participating in life.

The stars of the King and Queen often depict individuals in positions who are able to aid, are affluent and have authority. There are two primary expressions of the King and Queen. One is pompous, arrogant and pretentious, with an air of denial to matters deemed to be beneath them. The other is beneficent, generous, wise and compassionate, willing to aid others in lesser positions or who need assistance. Which is dominant, or both, depends upon one's level of life experience, emotional maturity and spiritual awareness.

Cetus is the fear-instilling monster of collective human consciousness. Many would like to blame the monster on every thing and every one outside of self, a victim mentality perpetuating our human condition and the entrapments we find ourselves in. However, the key phrase here is “human consciousness.” This implies each of us is responsible for the collective consciousness we find ourselves in—the reality of our personal lives and that of our world we uphold by consensus.

Triangulum teaches us to see beyond the judgments of fear-based dualistic mind and the dramatics it produces.

Our New Moon eclipse inspires us to recognize, perhaps through a reflection of events, conditions or people in our lives, that any issues we have with them are made manifest by our inner resonance and subsequent attitudes we hold. It inspires us to relinquish those attitudes that keep us segregated into a me-against-the-world mentality.

Adding to the dynamics of the Solar Eclipse are two other factors.

Neptune [7pi] is conjunct the descendant and in a harmonious aspect to the eclipse. It is also conjunct star sigma Aquarii [6pi], in the water from Aquarius’ urn. About this area, Diana Rosenberg writes: “Here the great Urn of Aquarius, with its eternally-flowing, all-forgiving waters of heaven, purifies and cleanses all sins.”

The second factor is the position of Mars [11li] which is part of the Grand Cross but also quincunx the eclipse. (We will see shortly why the position of Mars is important.) Here Mars is conjunct the stars of the Virgin and the Hydra so that Diana Rosenberg states that here we have people who are self-righteous “holier-than-thou” zealots who persecute those who, in their eyes, do not adhere to their ideas of morality and high standards. There are, therefore, both oppressions and struggles against them and transits to these stars bring about major changes in laws, mores and ways of thinking.

Now all that is left to do is to progress the eclipse chart to August 22, the date of the news. We find the Grand Cross containing Mars-Uranus-Pluto-Jupiter straddling the horizon axis. Relevant key phrases are:

Jupiter-Uranus: A sudden fortunate turn of events.
Jupiter-Pluto: To understand that the power of institutions (Pluto in Capricorn) must be accompanied by temperance, empathy and compassion (Jupiter in Cancer).

In this context please remember that Uranus [14ar] is conjunct the star Alpheratz, alpha Andromeda [14ar] in the head of the chained woman. Andromeda’s head is also the navel of Pegasus – the Flying Horse that lifts Andromeda from captivity (see image).

Low-cost electrical energy device developed at Stanford

Dragon – symbol of power, electricity and lightning

Now scientists at Stanford University have developed a low-cost, emissions-free device that uses an ordinary AAA battery to produce hydrogen by water electrolysis. The battery sends an electric current through two electrodes that split liquid water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. Unlike other water splitters that use precious-metal catalysts, the electrodes in the Stanford device are made of inexpensive and abundant nickel and iron. To understand the astrological basis for this news I take my readers back to the New Moon lunar cycle of March 30 to April 29. In his overview for this lunar month Nick Fiorenza wrote [1]:

The New Moon catalyzes an unprecedented lunar cycle providing opportunity for revolutionary change in many facets of our personal lives and in the world. The main event occurring in this lunar month is the Mars-Jupiter-Uranus-Pluto Grand Square. This Grand Square gateway is intense, challenging and deeply cathartic. It is a doorway that requires a decisive choice to leave one way of being, to live the wisdom gained from the past, and to morph into a new way of being and into a new world paradigm yet to unfold throughout the remainder of the 2010s. The New Moon occurs in mid-sidereal Pisces, conjoining Uranus within 2.5°, with the Sun and Moon activating the catalytic T-Square, specifically Uranus, impelling spontaneous, electrical, and radical innovative solutions to break free from the conforming bounds of the past, a theme continuing throughout this lunar cycle. The New-Moon conjoins Algenib of the Great Square of Pegasus, the wing tip of Pegasus, bringing inspiration to take decisive action to lift ourselves to greater heights, and from  binding limitations of an antiquated paradigm, both our personal paradigms and our global paradigm.

The Full Moon for this lunar cycle took place on April 15 and was a lunar eclipse. A chart for the Full Moon drawn for Standford, California is shown here. Notice the prominent placement of the Mars-Jupiter-Uranus-Pluto Grand Square on the meridian axis. More specifically, Mars on the MC is conjunct the stars of Draco, the dragon; Corvus, the Raven and Bootis.

About this area Diana Rosenberg [2] writes:

There is electricity in these stars, an intensity and brilliance that illuminates the brooding landscape of mankind’s travail on Earth…This is an area of physics and inventions, especially those connected to electricity, power sources, light and lightning.

It may be recalled that the ancient mythical dragon has been linked to lightning (see image above) and therefore by association with electricity.

The obvious question would be why now. As regular readers know mundane charts are activated when progressed angles pass over significant planets. Shown here is the eclipse chart progressed to August 22, the date of the new. Notice that progressed horizon axis triggers the Grand Cross on that day!
