New York state to dim lights to save migrating birds

The state of New York is to turn off non-essential lights in state-run buildings to help birds navigate their migratory routes in spring and autumn. Migrating birds are believed to use stars to navigate but they can be disorientated by electric lights, causing them to crash into buildings. The phenomenon, known as "fatal light attraction", is estimated to kill up to one billion birds a year in the US. Millions of birds migrate through New York along the Atlantic Flyway route. Now those passing over the city by night will stand a better chance of making it further north. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that bright outdoor lights will be turned off between 23:00 and dawn during peak migration seasons in spring and autumn. This news comes to us at the First Quarter Moon phase a chart for which is shown here. The Moon [5le] is conjunct M44 Cancri [7le] SW of Beehive Cluster, Praesepe. The following extract from Nick Fiorenza [1] tells that Praesepe is about migration to new places so that it fits in perfectly with the theme of migrating birds:

Alignments with Praesepe may indicate a new dwelling place is at hand or that one is in order to find. As with the migration of bees from an old hive, before identifying their new direction, there can be frenetic confusion at first, a scattered sense and lack of direction before moving toward their new home. This is temporary and is part of intuiting the feeling for the right direction, much like turning in a complete circle to identify the way that feels right. Praesepe asks us to trust in our magnetic sense, on our inner compass, and to hone in on our new direction while honoring the inherent confusion of the emergence process.

The Moon is conjunct Jupiter [13le] on the MC [15le]. Here we have the stars Dubhe, alpha Ursa Major and Kochab, beta Ursa Minor in the constellation of the protective Mother Bear and her Little Cub. Diana Rosenberg links these stars to “issues relating to the destruction or protection of children, animals and the environment” [2].

Finally, the Sun [5ta] is conjunct the star Alphirk, beta Cepheus [3].

Alphirk is sometimes indicative of a male in an authoritative position offering aid  or altering conditions in a way that otherwise would be impossible through our own power alone.

In our case here, this would be a reference to the New York Governor who has made it possible for the birds to fly safely on their ancient migration routes.

PS: The TNP Poseidon [11sc] is conjunct the Ascendant [8sc] and refers to “light” among other things. http://www.treehousemountain.com/html/keywords.htm
