Brain waves: The developing relationship between psychiatry and electrophysiology

We are approaching the 100th anniversary of the demonstration that the brain is an oscillatory organ, and the first recording of a human electroencephalogram (EEG). German psychiatrist Hans Berger was a keen observer who recognized that the first oscillations he detected (eponymously named 'Berger waves', and later 'alpha waves') were reactive to the stimulation of the patient, and sensitive to the presence of illnesses such as dementia. The enthusiasm generated by Berger's discovery soon gave way to skepticism: his interest in cerebral energetics and psychic phenomena led him to speculate about using EEG to quantify the energy of a human thought, and transmitting thoughts from one individual to another. For much of the past 100 years, the relationship between psychiatry and the study of cerebral oscillatory activity continued to be marked by swings from enthusiasm (generated by exciting research findings) to skepticism (generated by the challenge of relating results to fundamental brain processes).  Electrophysiology research arguably generates more research results than any other brain imaging technology, owing to the low cost of performing EEG studies and the low burden on research subjects. Interpretation of the results of these studies, however, has consistently been bedeviled by the absence of a consistent physiologic framework in which to interpret results. 1 June

The powerful total lunar eclipse of April 4 continues to produce interesting news in its wake.
The author of the article is Andrew F. Leuchter,  a Professor of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. We, therefore, begin with the chart for the lunar eclipse at Los Angeles. Notice that the eclipse axis is in aspect to the meridian. Since the Uranus-Pluto square aligns with the eclipse axis we can expect major scientific breakthroughs at this place. But does the eclipse chart give us a hint of a possible nature of the breakthrough? Yes, it does. The Sun is conjunct Uranus and the asteroid Psyche [1]. The stars in the backdrop of this conjunction are those in King Cepheus' head!

PSYCHE: raw wounds psychologically; vulnerability; memories; insight; psychic impressionability; psychological recovery; the state of your “mental health;” head wounds; brain states.
URANUS: electricity.

A combination of Psyche-Uranus is therefore hinting at a breakthrough in the use of electricity in understanding or treating brain states.

Progressing the eclipse chart to 1 June, the date of the article, we find that the progressed Ascendant triggers the eclipse configuration through hard aspects confirming our thesis that the eclipse is cosmic force behind this news item.

Interested readers may like to go back to previous posts where the same eclipse referred to issues connected with the brain [2][3].
