Yanis Varoufakis – a modern day hero Perseus

Perseus and Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini

The referendum of 5th July will stay in history as a unique moment when a small European nation rose up against debt-bondage. Like all struggles for democratic rights, so too this historic rejection of the Eurogroup’s 25th June ultimatum comes with a large price tag attached. It is, therefore, essential that the great capital bestowed upon our government by the splendid NO vote be invested immediately into a YES to a proper resolution – to an agreement that involves debt restructuring, less austerity, redistribution in favour of the needy, and real reforms. Soon after the announcement of the referendum results, I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted ‘partners’, for my… ‘absence’ from its meetings; an idea that the Prime Minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. For this reason I am leaving the Ministry of Finance today. I consider it my duty to help Alexis Tsipras exploit, as he sees fit, the capital that the Greek people granted us through yesterday’s referendum. And I shall wear the creditors’ loathing with pride. By Yanis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis was born March 24, 1961 in Athens. His time of birth is not known so we will use a noon chart. With his Sun in Aries, he is a courageous daredevil willing to stand up for his country. Currently his solar arc progressed Sun [26ta] is conjunct the star Algol, beta Perseus. Remember that Perseus is the hero who saves Andromeda from the jaws of the Sea Monster, Cetus. Algol is the head of slain Medusa, held by Perseus. Medusa represents the chaotic self-defeating forces within self, which are driven by fear. It is our fear that freezes us in our tracks and is that which we must slay to claim our true personal power and fulfill our greater purpose on Earth [1].

The progressed Sun [26ta] conjoins his radix Nessus [26ta] and makes hard aspects to Juno, Hebe, Hidalgo, Icarus. Key phrases for these entities from Philip Sedgwick and Martha Wescott are as below:

NESSUS : bad blood between parties, feuds over money especially regarding relationship dissolution. (Philip Sedgwick)
JUNO: maintenance of one's rights or position with other; question of “rights” and fairness/compromise; enforcement of fairness
HEBE: enabling (facilitating the egocentric, emotionally immature or demanding behaviors of others); codependency.
HIDALGO: Standing on principle & saying what's on your mind.
ICARUS: attraction to danger or risk.

With these key phrases it is not very difficult to come up with following sentence that describes Yanis Varoufakis’ actions perfectly.

Refusing to facilitate the emotionally immature or demanding behaviors of partners, one risks speaking one’s mind and demanding fairness in disagreements over money matters.

The following extract from a previous post [2] on how individual or collective karma is born explains how Yanis Varoufakis has lived up completely to his dharma - the challenge in his horoscope, thereby creating no new karma.

Dharma is nothing but the opportunity in the new cycle to work creatively with the old karma. If we refuse to create when the time comes we must take responsibility for the death and decay that must follow. Thus is new “karma” born.  Karma is not produced so much by a wrong kind of action ("sin") as by the type of action which derives from a refusal to perform creative acts , when the need for them has come. Karma is caused by a denial – conscious or unconscious – of the creative potentiality of the moment by those who live that moment. As a moment of time is left un-expressed by the living spirit in man, this spirit must become a slave of more time. Each one of us must reincarnate as long as we fail to incorporate in creative acts, the creative power of every moment we are incarnate.
